Nah- it may be true for some, but for most, I'd say people want to defend their homes, and know that police can't always get there quickly.

If there's a "societal" issue, it's that many don't trust that the US won't go full blown commie and start taking everyone's house away from them.

Paranoid? Maybe, but it's happened before in other places.
